Athens Guide

Athens - nightlife

Theatre/Opera

As soon as you get to Athens, you'll probably get the impression the city never sleeps, which is to a great extent true. Furthermore, Athens offers as many alternatives on such a confined space as probably only a few cities in the world do.

Early in the evening, you may want to check out some of the Athens Theatres. The best known of them - the Athens Theatre will definitely satisfy all possible visitors, no matter if you like classical drama, opera or, for example, modern musicals. If you are a ballet and symphony-fancier, you will marvel about all the opportunities to see the shows while you are visiting the city.

In addition, there are many other theatres in the area and all performances are usually rated top notch. Athenians say: “Everything that theatre is Athens has it”. Just go and enjoy!

Music Clubs

Do you want to just sit and listen to music? Do you want to go and have a few drinks? Or would you prefer rather dancing the night away with you partner? The choice that comes along here is virtually inexhaustible. There are so many clubs and pubs that you will just be partying forever. So you ask where to go to?

Bars/Pubs/Cafes

Pangrati - This small, cosmopolitan bar is renowned especially for its wonderful ethnic ambience. Afro-Cuban, Indian, Peruvian as well as Armenian music is played here several days a week. The performances usually start quite late since bands usually don't begin playing until after 11pm. If you happen to be in Pangrati try rakomelo - strong, liquorice-flavoured raki liquor dosed with honey so that it “goes down smoothly.”

Thissio - In the 19th century this place was where the royal stables were located. Today, it represents a popular entertainment premise, offering a variety of diversions. At the bar, local hipsters shake their groove things to rock music. In the cafe, crowds that are more staid gather to sit, drink, or just enjoy their conversation.

Alekos Island – This extraordinary bar with a Greek island theme and predominantly gay clientele is an Athens’s well-known venue. The music usually plays softly enough for you to chat on the comfortable couches and at convenient dark tables. Owner Alekos is more than welcoming to mix you one of his favorite drinks before long you will be friends with him and everyone else in the house. In addition, there are many different locals in the close neighborhood where you can have a great cocktail as well.
